Avignon is a French city located in the Provence region. This place was the seat of the Catholic popes in the 1300s, and it did not become part of France until the end of the 18th century. Avignon is thus famous for its history, but also for the theater because it hosts the greatest drama festival in Europe.
This airport is located about 6 miles from downtown Avignon and 2.5 miles from Caumont-sur-Durance. The airport code is AVN. It has only one runway, but it offers some interesting facilities, such as the Flying School. You can also find a couple of restaurants and shops, as well as several transportation options to take you to your next destination.
Things to do
We have mentioned that Avignon was the seat of the Catholic popes in the 14th century. There is one popular tourist attraction that dates from this period - Palais des Papes or the Palace of the Popes. This historical palace used to be the papal residence and now is a very important medieval building in Europe. The Musée du Petit Palais is another building from the same century that is now a museum of masterpieces from the Renaissance period. There are also two historic places from the 12th century - the Pont d'Avignon and Avignon Cathedral.
When you get tired of walking and exploring the city, go to the Jardin des Doms and have a cup of coffee by a beautiful pond or visit the Durance river, where you can go rafting or climbing. This river is not so close to the city, but it is worth taking a little longer trip.
